The NEW 2019 Instagram Algorithm | 4 Ways to Beat The System

“The New Instagram Algorithm Sucks.”

“F**k the new IG algorithm!”

”Why is my engagement down so much?!”

I’ve heard these all too often lately and to be honest, I may have said one of those statements at some point myself.  Truth is, social media platform algorithms will change… A LOT. It’s just the nature of the beast. When platforms kick off, organic reach is off the roof and when they get more popular, it goes down, and when they get reeeeally popular, it really goes down.  The only thing to do is to adapt.

I’m not gonna sit here and tell you I’m an algorithmic genius, but there are new strategies to keep in mind when navigating through this new phase of Instagram. The two biggest focus points to beat the new algorithm will be to focus on saves and shares.  They will both be key metrics to push your posts towards more feeds, more engagement and maybe even the IG Holy Grail: The #ExplorePage.

REMOVAL OF LIKES

For starters, we’re about to see a removal of likes.  Already rolled out in several other countries, you will begin to see “liked by @xxxxx and others.”  You’ll be able to click on “others” and scroll through all the likers but you won’t see a like count on the post.  That goes for the posts on your feed. If it’s your own post, you’ll be able to click on “others” and it will tell you the count.

Check out branding expert @ayeshasehra’s post who’s in LA today but started her account in Canada so she has the Canadian interface showing no like count. Her post got thousands of likes but the count does not appear on the post.

Brands and people will not be happy with this as we’re so used to measuring success by likes as a major indicator of a post’s success.  “Like” it or not, it’s going in this direction which means that other engagement indicators will be that much more important.

INSTAGRAM SAVES AND SHARES ARE GOLD IN THE NEW ALGORITHM

To put it simply, the more saves (AKA bookmarks) and shares your post gets, the more it will be shown on people’s feeds. Although neither of these metrics can be seen publicly, you can click “insights” on your business profile posts and you can see how many users have saved by clicking the bookmark or shared by clicking the airplane icon. The more saves and shares your post gets, the more it will appear on people’s feeds. Here are some tips to get more saves and shares on your brand’s or personal posts on Instagram.

TIP #1 TO GET MORE INSTAGRAM SAVES, SHARES & ENGAGEMENT- MAKE THEM LAUGH

Humor goes a long way. This can go for just about every brand. Even if you feel your brand isn’t fun, I guarantee there’s a way to fit in some humor some how. If you can share a video, meme or photo that makes people stop and laugh, they are likely to share it with a friend, comment and tag someone, and save the post so they can come back to it later and get another laugh.

Here’s an example from one of my accounts @laramsfans on a recently posted funny meme about Antonio Brown. 74% percent of the 39K+ accounts reached on this post were NOT followers! This is because of the high number of shares and saves. These types of posts can get you on the explore page.

TIP #2 TO GET MORE INSTAGRAM SAVES, SHARES & ENGAGEMENT- EDUCATE WITH AN INFOGRAPHIC

Infographics are awesome.  They provide knowledge in an easy-to-understand visual format.  Don’t trip if you’re not a designer, you can go to Canva and create one on there.  Infographics are very share and save-worthy as they’re great to keep as a reference point for a future date when you have time to digest it.

TIP #3 TO GET MORE INSTAGRAM SAVES, SHARES & ENGAGEMENT- WRITE LONGER, REAL AND RAW CAPTIONS

This one goes against the idea that less is more.  In general, writing short and to-the-point captions are the way to go.  But if you have something important and valuable to share then it can almost become like a mini-blog.  Many won’t read the whole thing, but those that value what you had to say will definitely want to save and/or share.  I suggest breaking up your long captions with emojis and paragraph breaks so it doesn’t look like a giant blob.

Here’s an example by wellness entrepreneur @brenttotty who opens up to share his life story in this post.

TIP #4 TO GET MORE INSTAGRAM SAVES, SHARES & ENGAGEMENT- QUOTES, TIPS & HACKS

Instagram quotes have been around for years and when people see a quote they love they will for sure save it, comment or share it.  The same goes for tips or hacks. This can take the form of a recipe or a step by step scenario to achieve or create something cool.  Users will see these types of posts while quickly scrolling through their feed and want to come back to it later with more time to digest the info or execute your hack.

Truth is, a lot of these strategies and types of posts have been around for a while but the intent will change from just aiming to get likes to getting more “real” engagement via saves and shares.  Engagement rate calculation for brands will end up having to ditch the ‘like count’ and take these new metrics into account.

It’s social media, you either adapt or die off.
